The Inquisition and Rogue Traders

Ever since I read the Eisenhorn series by Dan Abnet I have been interested in making my own inquisitors, henchmen and rogue traders. The work of  KrautScientist over at his blog Eternal Hunt has also been a huge inspiration to me as well.

First up is a rogue trader by the name of Scaar Parghuur. He may look like an ork but looks can be deceiving.
His Story:
Scaar Parghuur is actually the result of Tau and Nicassar experiment. A small Sept, known as Kanasatka, on the edge of Tau space was faced with the impending doom of a massive ork invasion force. The military support needed to repulse such and invasion unlikely to be granted to what many in the Tau empire considered to be an insignificantly small part of the empire. Risking such military resources was deemed to be detrimental to the Greater Good. The fact that population of the Kanasatka Sept was 90% Gue'vesa and that the Sept was a relatively new member of the Empire was likely to have played a part in Empire coming to this decision. Despite being abandoned by the rest of the Tau Empire the Tau who were stationed in the Kanasatka Sept were fiercely loyal to their Sept and its inhabitants. They Ignored orders to evacuate anything of value and to abandon the Sept.

With the chances of being able to defeat the massive ork invasion in open combat being zero the leaders of the Sept sought alternative methods for repulsing the orks. Members of the Nicassar species, working with a group of Gue'vesa psykers, came up with a plan for psychically mind melding a Gue'vesa psyker with an ork so that the psyker's mind would replace that of the ork. The result would be a human who looked like an ork who could then infiltrate the ork fleet. It had been discovered that the flagship of the ork fleet, the massive space hulk Da World Krusha, was in fact the ancient remains of a mining station and at its heart was a dormant reactor core of a size and scale that had never been seen before. It had been determined that if the core were to be brought online and then overloaded to the point of melt down, the resulting implosion would wipe out the majority of the ork invasion force.

Psychically melding the mind of human and an ork was a near impossible task requiring dangerous levels of psychic energy. Many Gue'vesa psykers and their Nicassar partners were killed as they were overwhelmed by the psychic energy. Many ork subjects, who had been recovered from one of the first ork ships to enter the system, were also killed. These orks had been captured during an engagement when a coolant leak mixed with explosive decompression had caused the orks who had not been ejected into space, to be frozen alive. With all but one of the Gue'vesa psykers, having been killed, the Nicassar came to the conclusion that in order for the meld to work they would need an even more immense amount of psychic energy than had been previously thought. The Nicassar hierarchy asked their people for volunteers and even knowing that to agree to help meant certain death, every able bodied Nicassar volunteered.

The resulting destruction from the massive amounts of psychic energy was immense. The research station where the experiments had been taking place was destroyed and all but a hand full of the several hundred Nicassar were killed. A hole into the warp had been torn open and the moon on which was the research station was slowly being torn apart and sucked into the warp. The remaining Nicassar used what little psyhic strength they had left to keep the moon intact long enough for the body of ork and the surviers from the station to escape before the Nicassar and the moon were sucked into the warp. The loss of the moon caused massive destruction on the planet below as it was wracked by tidal waves, earthquakes, and several volcanic eruptions. Loss of life was fortunately minimal since most of the small population had been evacuated before the final attempt at mind melding.

Despite the destruction that was caused, this final attempt was a success. The Gue'vesa psyker's mind survived being melded into the orks body, albeit with one complication. It had been hoped that it would be possible for the psyker's mind to overwrite the mind of the ork. Unfortunately this did not happen and instead the two minds were combined into one. The subject could recall memories from both his life as a human and of being an ork. His personality was now no longer that of a human or of an ork but a combination of the two. He was still able to fluently speak gothic and several other languages that his human mind had known before, but now when angered his speech would become less precise and coherent and sound more like the blunt speech of an ork. Where before the subject as a human had been calm and not quick to anger he was now the opposite and not only very quick to anger but to violence as well. After psychically ripping the head off of an Ethereal who expressed doubts as too whether their new creation would be capable to completing its mission, some of the leaders of the Sept were worried that what they had created might more dangerous then the threat they were already facing. Orks for the most part were predictable and didn't employ much in the way of strategy, but what they had created was a creature with the strength, anger, and brute determination of an ork combined with the intelligence, cunning, and psychic ability of a human.

Scaar Parghuur, as he was now known after changing his human name of Scott Parker, angered by the indecisiveness of the leaders of the Sept stormed out of the briefing room and fought his way to the nearest hanger bay where he commandeered a ship and blasted his way out of the hanger. Mass confusion from one of their own ship blasting its way out of the hanger coupled with half the drones on the flagship going haywire and attacking the crew enabled Scaar to slip out of weapon range without being targeted. While Scaar is assumed to be the one to have caused the drones to malfunction it was never discovered how he was able to do it. After leaving the Tau fleet Scaar headed straight for the ork invasion force and the Tau fleet quickly broke off pursuit. The details and events of what happened next are unknown. All that is known is that the dormant reactor core on the ork flagship was activated and overloaded to the point of meltdown. The resulting implosion tore a massive hole into the warp into which most of the ork fleet was sucked before it closed up. The Tau Sept Fleet was easily able to destroy the remaining ork ships and secure the Sept space. In the heart of the capital of the Sept is a grand monument to Gue'vesa psykers and the Nicassar who gave their lives to defeat the ork invasion. There is no mention of Scaar Parghuur and it is only told that the psyhic experiments that destroyed the moon are what caused the ork fleet to be destroyed. However every ounce and awhile clean up drones need to be sent to the monument because it has been vandalized during the night and one of the Gue'vesa statues has had its face painted green.

How he was able to survive the implosion and when and how he was able to return from the warp is unknown, but Scaar Parghurr is now a very wealthy and feared rogue trader in the eastern fringe of the galaxy. Only a handful of people know of his true identity or of how he was created. Most assume he is just a regular ork and that is an assumption that can be very dangerous to make.

My Inspiration:
My inspiration for this character actually comes from a toy I have from my childhood. This little guy has been sitting on my desk for as long as I can remember. He is the awesome Brain Gremlin from the movie Gremlins 2.

He was easily my favorite character from the movie. When I got into Warhammer 40k back in the mid 90s the first army I got into was Orks and I used the mini in the picture at the beginning of this post as my warboss. He wasn't big like most ork warbosses so I came up with the idea of having the reason he was in charge wasn't because he was the biggest or the strongest but it was because he was smarter and more cunning then the other orks. Just like the Brain Gremlin. So now 20 years later I decided to draw from my old inspirations when making the character of Scaar Parghuur.

Modeling:
The model I used is an old ork freebooter mini released by GW back in the early 90s. I added some random bits to make his cybork body look even more tricked out then it already is. The power pack on his back is made from a piece of a plastic racecar model and the end of an old ork plasma gun. This was my first every attempt at painting a glow effect and I'm happy with the result. I learned some things doing it that I hope will make my next attempts look better.

His Crew:
This is what I have painted so far of his crew. So far his crew consists of orks and humans but I plan to add a few from minis some of the other races too.
